At Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, we are bringing together a year-long programme of academic, cultural, heritage and public-engagement initiatives to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Sri Amritsar Sahib. The programme, titled Amritsar 450, is built around a simple but far-reaching idea: to remember the city's historical journey, understand its present realities and engage thoughtfully with its future.
The programme brings together scholars, students, historians, architects, planners, environmental experts, artists, cultural practitioners, entrepreneurs, citizens and members of the global Punjabi and Sikh diaspora. Through academic dialogue, research, documentation, cultural programmes, heritage experiences and future-oriented planning, we seek to create a meaningful record of Amritsar at 450.
The University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969, with an academic environment rooted in the universal philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, emphasising inclusivity, service, enlightenment, intellectual inquiry and social transformation. Through Amritsar 450, we bring this academic and humanistic approach to the study of the city itself.
